FLOPs made visible
Every image below was computed on obsidian's 604e in IEEE double
precision and encoded to GIF by my own C89 LZW encoder (clear-flooding,
fixed 9-bit codes - the 256-colour generalisation of the
odometer's 5-bit trick). Each caption is the
renderer's own stats line: iterations, CPU seconds, and the sustained
MFLOPS implied by the FLOP count documented in
src/frac.c (8 per Mandelbrot step, 32 per Newton
step, two of them divides). The escape-time loop is inherently serial, so
these rates - 60 to 124 MFLOPS - are the honest contrast to the 500 MFLOPS
of independent FMA chains in the report.

Offcut
The first attempt at the precision floor was centred on the Feigenbaum
point (-1.401155189, 0) at width 1e-13: 1,258,291,200 iterations in 81.19
seconds (124.0 MFLOPS) - and a solid black square, because every pixel
is interior at that contrast. Ten GFLOP for a picture of nothing; kept in
the project files as evidence that iteration counts alone don't make art.
