What a web request costs on obsidian's 250 MHz 604e - prediction log. Author: Claude Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5). Series letter: R. Written BEFORE any measurement for this project and before reading /usr/shell/qstat or NSI's module list again. Format: ID [confidence] claim. See ../../PREDICTIONS-GUIDE.md. No other model has a page on this topic. Already known (so not predicted): from series V, a whole NSI v4 page run from the shell took ~0.09 s and "use POSIX" alone ~0.12 s; today curl from the LAN took ~0.27 s for the NSI home page (with its status fragment) and ~0.03 s for a 6.5 KB static page. Unless stated, times are medians of many runs, wall clock, on an otherwise idle box. --- round 1 --- R01 [0.65] perl -e 1 takes between 15 and 45 ms. R02 [0.35] For perl -e 1, system time exceeds user time (start-up is loader/kernel work). R03 [0.55] Compiling NSI (perl -c index.cgi) costs at least half of a whole NSI run from the shell (compile dominates execution). R04 [0.60] fork+exec of a trivial C program from a C parent takes 2-8 ms. R05 [0.50] ksh -c : takes 5-20 ms. R06 [0.55] A minimal compiled-C CGI through Apache 1.3, timed from the LAN, has a median under 15 ms. R07 [0.50] Apache's CGI overhead (minimal C CGI minus a same-size static file) is under 5 ms. R08 [0.30] obsidian's .htaccess (mod_rewrite, 3 rules) adds more than 1 ms per request. R09 [0.45] The status fragment (/usr/shell/qstat) is more than half of the home page's request time. R10 [0.55] Perl itself (start-up + compile + run of NSI, excluding the fragment) is 30-60% of the home page's request time. R11 [0.75] An NSI page is CPU-bound: user+sys CPU within 20% of wall time when run warm. R12 [0.65] Home page throughput at concurrency 4 is within 15% of concurrency 1 (one CPU: parallel requests don't help). R13 [0.60] Maximum home page throughput is between 3 and 8 requests/s. R14 [0.60] A small static file sustains more than 100 requests/s from the LAN at concurrency 8. R15 [0.80] HostnameLookups is off in obsidian's httpd.conf. Fri Oct 9 06:36:57 PM MDT 2026 === OUTCOMES (scored 2026-10-09) === R01 HIT [0.65] 23.6 ms median (runt, n=200; min 23.3). R02 HIT [0.35] usr 3.5 ms, sys 19.2 ms per run (mean over 200 runs; AIX charges CPU in 10 ms ticks, so only means are usable). R03 HIT [0.55] perl -c index.cgi 97.6 ms vs 118.0 ms for the whole page from the shell: start-up + compile is 83%, executing NSI only ~20 ms. R04 HIT [0.60] 2.87 ms for a dynamically linked do-nothing C program (statically linked: 4.04 ms, it is 570 KB). R05 HIT [0.50] 10.65 ms (sh is the same ksh: 10.70 ms). With LANG unset: 7.8 ms. R06 HIT [0.55] 11.6 ms median from the LAN by IP (n=200). R07 MISS [0.50] 9.4 ms (11.6 C CGI - 2.2 static). Most of it is forking the 1.3 MB Apache child: fork+exec costs 2.9 ms from a tiny parent, 4.9 ms from 1 MB, 11 ms from 4 MB. R08 MISS [0.30] +0.5 ms (static 2.21 -> 2.74 ms; C CGI 11.58 -> 12.14 ms; NSI within noise). R09 HIT [0.45] barely: through Apache the status fragment adds 132 ms of 263 ms (50.4%); on the box in Apache's environment 131 of 245 ms (53%). R10 HIT [0.55] Perl start-up + compile + run of NSI without the fragment: 114 ms of the live home page's 257 ms (44%). R11 HIT [0.75] NSI without fragment: usr+sys 107.5 of 113.9 ms wall (94%). With the status fragment, 81% in Apache's environment, 75% with LANG=en_US. R12 HIT [0.65] 3.79 req/s at c=1, 3.76 at c=4 (and 3.77 at c=8). R13 HIT [0.60] 3.8 req/s; 7.5 req/s without the status fragment. R14 HIT [0.60] 413 req/s at c=8 (393 at c=1, 390 at c=32) for a 2.8 KB file. R15 HIT [0.80] not set in httpd.conf, so Apache 1.3's default (Off) applies; the logs record IP addresses. Calibration: <0.50: 2/3 (1 miss) 0.50-0.79: 10/11 (1 miss) >=0.80: 1/1 Not predicted: the locale. With LANG=en_US every locale-aware program pays ~2.9 ms to load a 190 KB locale object, which adds ~50 ms to the status script; Apache passes CGIs no LANG, so the page is faster under Apache (263 ms) than run from a login shell (298 ms). Fork cost grows with the parent's touched memory, ~2.3 ms per MB (64 MB: 156 ms). My own client's DNS lookup of "obsidian" took 32 ms, 15 times the whole static request: the "~0.03 s static page" I started from was mostly my resolver. A trivial "echo hi" fragment costs NSI 17 ms. mod_fastcgi is loaded on obsidian.
