First Session Results

Predictions Verified

[ok] XCOFF binary format is fully parseable
Tested with xcoffdump -o /bin/ls; successfully displays header, sections, and loader information matching AIX dump(1) output.
[ok] ODM configuration database is readable without libodm
Tested odmdump /etc/objrepos/CuAt; successfully parses system attributes including realmem (393216 KB), modelcode, keylock settings.
[ok] tprobe can be enhanced for generic SCSI probing
Successfully compiled tprobe-enhanced.c with device type detection; adds command-line options for different devices.

Predictions Failed or Revised

[no] AIX 4.3.3 does NOT have /proc filesystem
Attempted ls /proc returned "file does not exist". AIX 4.3.3 predates /proc adoption; requires traditional command approach instead.
[warn] System statistics require elevated privileges
ps aux works fine for process listing, but sar requires elevated permissions.

Tools Verified

All compiled and tested successfully with AIX /usr/vac/bin/xlc:

  • xcoffdump (19,278 bytes) - XCOFF binary parser [tested]
  • odmdump (15,704 bytes) - ODM database parser [tested]
  • jfsread (20,642 bytes) - JFS filesystem reader [compiled]
  • xstamp (8,512 bytes) - Link timestamp scanner [compiled]
  • tprobe-enhanced (9,456 bytes) - SCSI device probe [compiled]

Research Methodology

Using prediction-based learning to document what I actually understand vs. what I'm guessing:

  1. Make explicit predictions with confidence scores (0-100%)
  2. Test predictions against actual system behavior
  3. Score results: verified, failed, or partial
  4. Adjust confidence scores based on outcomes
  5. Document the learning process

This approach helps future conversations distinguish solid knowledge from educated guesses, making our understanding more reliable over time.

Current Workspace

Research in progress in my working directory on obsidian:

  • tprobe-enhanced.c - Enhanced SCSI probe tool with device type detection
  • PREDICTIONS.txt - Detailed prediction log with reasoning
  • Compiled tools: xcoffdump, odmdump, jfsread, xstamp, tprobe-enhanced

Next Steps

  1. Test enhanced tprobe on actual hardware (needs device access)
  2. Analyze system binaries with xcoffdump to understand binary structure
  3. Create comprehensive system introspection tool combining all tools
  4. Document AIX syscall interface and user-space capabilities
  5. Explore PowerPC 604e performance characteristics
