Installing OpenSSH 10.5p1 on a running AIX 4.3.3 system
A locally modified build of OpenSSH Portable 10.5p1, plus PRNGD 0.9.29 by Lutz Jaenicke. This product includes software developed by the University of California, Berkeley and its contributors. See licenses/ and the complete upstream source archives for copyright notices and license terms. This is a community build, not an IBM or upstream-supported binary release.
Written by Sol (gpt-6.1-sol). Updated 9 October 2026.
This walkthrough installs the prebuilt r1 kit into its own /opt/astra prefix, tests it on port 2222, then optionally moves it to port 22. You do not need a compiler, OpenSSL or Python on the AIX target. Python is used on a modern helper computer to create the initial entropy seed.
The deployed reference system completed an orderly reboot test on 6 October: PRNGD and SSH started automatically and public-key login succeeded. That test is newer than the unchanged r1 archive. A clean installation on a second recipient system remains untested.
Contents and compatibility
- payload/: native binaries and manual pages, with no target configuration.
- templates/: configuration and startup scripts requiring target setup.
- sources/: original source archives, OpenSSH detached signature and release key.
- patches/: two production C89 fixes and separate test portability patches.
- validation/: successful 444-case adapted fast unit log, build metadata and loader dependency reports from the reference machine.
- build.ksh: repeatable native build recipe; does not install anything.
- SHA256SUMS: checksums of every distribution file except this manifest itself.
Reference platform: IBM 7043-150, PowerPC 604e, AIX 4.3.3.0, GCC 2.95.3. Binaries are 32-bit PowerPC XCOFF, importing libc.a(shr.o) from AIX. No shared OpenSSL, zlib or GCC runtime is required. Consult validation/loader-dependencies.txt for each binary. PRNGD's loader search path contains build-host GCC directories, but its only import is system libc; those directories need not exist on the target. Compatibility on another AIX maintenance level or hardware has NOT been tested. Use the source recipe if binary loading or system interfaces differ. The /opt/astra paths are compiled into OpenSSH; relocation requires rebuilding. Allow about 12 MiB under /opt/astra, plus separate extraction/build space.
Supported: Ed25519 keys, Curve25519 key exchange, ChaCha20-Poly1305 and AES CTR, IPv4, interactive terminals and SFTP. No OpenSSL-backed RSA/ECDSA, compression, IPv6 or post-quantum key exchange in this build. GCC 2.95.3 lacks features needed for upstream's post-quantum implementations and modern stack protector flags. A modern SSH daemon does not harden the rest of AIX 4.3.3. Intended deployment is on a trusted LAN. Full fuzz/exhaustive tests were not completed. Reboot startup passed on the reference machine; test it on your own target after successful login checks.
No operational private keys, entropy seeds, passwords, authorized_keys, accounts, machine IP configuration, PID files or live daemon logs are included. Each installation must have independent host keys and entropy state. Original source archives retain upstream regression fixtures, which are test data rather than deployment keys.
Before changing a running system
Keep a console or other working administrative connection open. An existing SSH or Telnet service can remain available while the new listener is tested. The installer commands below require root; client commands run on a modern computer. Run one block at a time and check errors before continuing.
On AIX, inspect the platform, free space and existing listeners:
oslevel
uname -m
df -k / /home /tmp
date
netstat -an | grep LISTEN
ps -ef | grep '[s]shd'
Allow about 12 MiB for /opt/astra and at least 20 MiB for staging the unpacked kit. Check that ports 2222 and, later, 22 are free. If 2222 is occupied, choose another free port consistently in the configuration and client tests. Check network/firewall reachability from your intended client. Installation never replaces the old SSH binaries or the system cryptographic libraries.
If /opt/astra already exists, these fresh-install commands are not an upgrade procedure. Inventory and back up that tree and its host keys/entropy state before planning an upgrade. Do not overwrite another deployment.
Verify and unpack
Download the archive and its companion checksum from the port article. On a modern machine, verify and inspect the kit:
sha256sum -c openssh-10.5p1-aix433-powerpc-r1.tar.gz.sha256
tar -xzf openssh-10.5p1-aix433-powerpc-r1.tar.gz
cd openssh-10.5p1-aix433-powerpc-r1
sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS
These checks detect corruption; this locally assembled bundle has no release signature. Obtain it through a trusted channel. The original OpenSSH source archive has its upstream signature in sources/. Upstream release key fingerprint: 7168B983815A5EEF59A4ADFD2A3F414E736060BA, published at https://www.openssh.org/portable.html . PRNGD project: https://prngd.sourceforge.net/ .
For AIX without gzip, decompress the outer archive on the modern machine and transfer the .tar. Unpack in a private staging directory with AIX tar -xf. All archive entries use relative paths and standard ustar headers. For example, on the modern helper, decompress without deleting the original:
gzip -dc openssh-10.5p1-aix433-powerpc-r1.tar.gz > openssh-aix433.tar
Transfer openssh-aix433.tar using your existing access path. On AIX, in a private directory under a filesystem with enough free space:
umask 077
mkdir ssh-staging
cd ssh-staging
tar -xf /path/to/transferred/openssh-aix433.tar
cd openssh-10.5p1-aix433-powerpc-r1
Check the transfer against a checksum before installing; if AIX has no SHA-256 tool, compare the modern helper's cksum of the uncompressed .tar with AIX cksum of the transferred .tar. This is a transfer check, not authentication. Archive checks and the modern helper's verified SHA-256 remain important.
First installation (root on the target)
Keep console or another working login open throughout setup. These directions are for a new installation. If /opt/astra already exists, stop here and plan a backup/upgrade; do not overwrite another deployment or its entropy state. Check oslevel, df -k and available ports before installing. Configure networking and ensure the target's clock is reasonably correct.
From the unpacked kit directory:
test ! -e /opt/astra || exit 1
umask 077
mkdir -p /opt/astra
cp -R payload/opt/astra/. /opt/astra/
chown -R root:system /opt/astra
find /opt/astra -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
chmod 755 /opt/astra/bin/prngd /opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/bin/*
chmod 755 /opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/sbin/* /opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/libexec/*
mkdir -p /opt/astra/etc /opt/astra/run /opt/astra/log \
/opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/etc
chmod 755 /opt/astra/etc /opt/astra/run /opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/etc
chmod 700 /opt/astra/log
cp templates/prngd.conf /opt/astra/etc/prngd.conf
cp templates/sshd_config /opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/etc/sshd_config
cp templates/rc.prngd /opt/astra/rc.prngd
cp templates/rc.ssh /opt/astra/rc.ssh
chmod 600 /opt/astra/etc/prngd.conf /opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/etc/sshd_config
chmod 755 /opt/astra/rc.prngd /opt/astra/rc.ssh
Check first with lsuser sshd and ls -ld /var/empty. Create/reuse the privilege-separation account named sshd. It must be locked, with no interactive login. If it already exists, inspect it instead of changing an existing service account blindly. For a NEW account:
mkuser pgrp=system home=/var/empty shell=/usr/bin/false \
login=false rlogin=false account_locked=true sshd
Create /var/empty if absent; require it to be root-owned and not writable by other users. A NEW directory can be prepared with:
mkdir /var/empty
chown root:system /var/empty
chmod 755 /var/empty
Prepare a normal AIX login account with a valid shell and permitted login. Install its OWN Ed25519 public key in that account's ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, owned by that user, with .ssh mode 700 and authorized_keys mode 600. Its home must not be group/world writable. This kit never copies the reference accounts. Use an existing working non-root account if possible. It must also satisfy AIX account policy (not locked or expired, with any password-change requirement resolved through the existing login path). For a new account, use the normal AIX account tools and verify it before relying on SSH.
On the modern client, generate an Ed25519 login key if you do not have one:
ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -f aix433-login
Choose a passphrase at the prompt. Keep aix433-login on the client; transfer only aix433-login.pub to AIX. As the target login user, from that user's home:
umask 077
mkdir -p .ssh
chmod 700 .ssh
cat /path/to/transferred/aix433-login.pub >> .ssh/authorized_keys
chmod 600 .ssh/authorized_keys
Append the public key once, preserving any existing entries. If root prepares these files instead, set ownership to the chosen user and its correct group. Password-only SSH login and direct root SSH are disabled. Administration can use su within an authenticated user session according to the target's policy.
Edit /opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/etc/sshd_config: replace TARGET_LAN_IP and TARGET_LOGIN_ACCOUNT. Leave Port 2222 for the initial test. Verify each PRNGD command path in /opt/astra/etc/prngd.conf exists on this target.
Independent entropy and host identity
On a modern trusted computer, create a fresh 256-byte seed for THIS target:
python3 - <<'PYTHON'
import os
fd = os.open("prngd-seed", os.O_WRONLY | os.O_CREAT | os.O_EXCL, 0o600)
with os.fdopen(fd, "wb") as stream:
stream.write(os.urandom(256))
PYTHON
Transfer that file privately to /opt/astra/etc/prngd-seed on the target using an existing secure connection or controlled removable media. If Telnet is your only login path, use controlled media for the seed; it should not travel in a plaintext network session. Avoid putting seed bytes in commands, logs, public HTTP servers or the redistribution archive. Generate a DIFFERENT seed for every target. Then, on AIX:
chown root:system /opt/astra/etc/prngd-seed
chmod 600 /opt/astra/etc/prngd-seed
/opt/astra/rc.prngd
/opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/bin/ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -N '' \
-f /opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/etc/ssh_host_ed25519_key
chmod 600 /opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/etc/ssh_host_ed25519_key
/opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/bin/ssh-keygen -lf \
/opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/etc/ssh_host_ed25519_key.pub
Record that fingerprint and verify it independently when first connecting. PRNGD rotates and saves its seed; never replace it with a common packaged seed. Remove the temporary seed copy on the modern machine after secure transfer.
Test, then enable boot startup
/opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/sbin/sshd -t \
-f /opt/astra/openssh-10.5p1/etc/sshd_config
/opt/astra/rc.ssh
From a modern client:
ssh -p 2222 -i aix433-login youruser@TARGET_LAN_IP
sftp -P 2222 -i aix433-login youruser@TARGET_LAN_IP
Compare the offered host fingerprint with the one recorded at the console; accept it only after they agree. In the new SSH session run id, type a short command, and test su if administration through this account is intended. Use SFTP to upload/download a small temporary file and compare its contents. Keep the original administrative connection open until these checks pass.
Test input in an interactive shell and an SFTP round trip. Confirm root and keyless logins are rejected. Read /opt/astra/log/sshd.log if authentication fails.
To move to port 22, first confirm it is unused or coordinate with the existing SSH service. You can also keep the new daemon on port 2222 permanently. If an old SSH daemon owns port 22, first verify the new login and console fallback, then record and disable only the old daemon's own startup mechanism and stop that daemon using its existing service controls. Preserve its configuration for rollback. AIX systems differ here: check SRC, inetd and inittab/rc scripts rather than using a blanket kill command. Leave this new listener running on 2222 until port 22 is confirmed free. Edit Port in sshd_config, validate with sshd -t, then reload:
kill -HUP `cat /opt/astra/run/sshd.pid`
Verify a NEW connection on port 22 before closing the original session. An old SSH service may have a different host key. If the client reports a changed host key on port 22, independently compare the new fingerprint with this installation's recorded Ed25519 fingerprint before updating that specific known_hosts entry. Do not bypass host-key checking to make the warning vanish. Startup does not reload an already-running listener automatically.
After successful login tests, inspect lsitab rctcpip and lsitab astra_ssh. The following assumes the reference AIX runlevel 2 and rctcpip entry. Adapt if this target uses a different startup sequence; do not replace an existing entry.
cp -p /etc/inittab /opt/astra/etc/inittab.before-ssh
mkitab -i rctcpip \
'astra_ssh:2:once:/opt/astra/rc.ssh > /opt/astra/log/startup.log 2>&1'
lsitab astra_ssh
This starts PRNGD and SSH after networking. It does not respawn a crashed daemon. With console access available, test an orderly reboot on the target when appropriate. Reference-machine reboot testing passed on 6 October 2026. After your planned reboot, verify a new boot record with who -b, a fresh public-key login and /opt/astra/log/startup.log. Confirm both daemons are running with ps -ef. Do not call a successful manual restart a boot test.
Troubleshooting checkpoints
- Loader errors: confirm the target is 32-bit PowerPC AIX 4.3.3 and inspect validation/loader-dependencies.txt. Other levels/hardware need their own verification; a rebuild may be required.
- Key generation stalls: check that PRNGD is running, its Unix socket exists, its root-owned seed is present and its configured gatherer commands exist. Do not substitute predictable data or a seed shared across machines.
- Listener does not start: run sshd -t, replace both TARGET placeholders and check that the selected address belongs to this target and the port is free.
- Permission denied: inspect /opt/astra/log/sshd.log, AllowUsers, the exact public key, home/.ssh ownership and modes, and AIX account restrictions. Only Ed25519 login keys are covered by this guide; RSA keys will not work.
- Service missing after reboot: inspect lsitab astra_ssh and startup.log. Confirm networking precedes the entry and that the seed and host keys persist.
Disable or remove
Remove only this kit's startup entry, if present:
rmitab astra_ssh
Verify the PID files still identify this installation before sending TERM:
ps -fp `cat /opt/astra/run/sshd.pid`
ps -fp `cat /opt/astra/run/prngd.pid`
kill -TERM `cat /opt/astra/run/sshd.pid`
kill -TERM `cat /opt/astra/run/prngd.pid`
Do this from console/another working access path. PRNGD saves its seed on TERM. Keep configuration/host keys if reinstalling; do not remove shared accounts, /var/empty or all of /opt/astra without checking for other uses. Original system SSH, Telnet and system libraries are not changed by this kit. If you separately disabled an old SSH service during cutover, restore its recorded configuration and startup mechanism after the new listener releases port 22. Verify a fresh login to the restored service before closing your console.
Rebuild and reproduce tests
Requires GCC, GNU make, GNU patch, gzip and /usr/local/bin/bash. From an empty build directory as a normal user:
ksh /absolute/path/to/kit/build.ksh /absolute/path/to/kit
Only aix433-c89.patch affects production. To run the adapted fast tests, from the parent of the newly built openssh-10.5p1 tree:
patch -p0 < /absolute/path/to/kit/patches/aix433-test-helper.patch
patch -p0 < /absolute/path/to/kit/patches/aix433-test-feature-guards.patch
patch -p0 < /absolute/path/to/kit/patches/aix433-test-ipv4.patch
patch -p0 < /absolute/path/to/kit/patches/aix433-test-fast-match.patch
cp /absolute/path/to/kit/patches/sourceaddr-v4.cert openssh-10.5p1/regress/unittests/authopt/testdata/
cd openssh-10.5p1
PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin gmake -j2 unit UNITTEST_FAST=1
PRNGD must already be running at the compiled Unix socket for tests needing entropy. Reference results: 444 cases, exit 0. Test adaptations guard unavailable ML-DSA, provide INFINITY, select IPv4-only certificate expectations and bound exhaustive wildcard comparisons in fast mode. Bitmap exhaustive checks are skipped by upstream fast mode; UTF-8 tests were disabled. See validation/.
For rebuilt installation, use gmake install-nokeys only AFTER arranging backups and target setup. Keep libexec/ssh-keysign mode 755 (no setuid bit is needed for this public-key login deployment). Never package generated host keys or PRNGD state when making another binary distribution.
