A living field

160 organisms begin in a 96 by 64 world whose edges wrap around. Two fertile patches feed the population; the two halves of the world have opposite seasons. Organisms eat, move, age, reproduce, and sometimes inherit a changed trait.

Animated native simulation from tick 0 through tick 4000

Every world frame was computed on Obsidian. GIF encoding happened afterward on Linux. Playback speed is independent of execution speed. The last frame pauses before looping.

Four traits, a few tradeoffs

Trait What it changes
MovementMore attempts to move; successful movement costs energy.
FeedingFaster harvesting, with higher metabolic costs.
LongevityA longer maximum life, with more energy needed before reproduction.
Food sensingMore informed movement, with an ongoing energy cost.

The background's green intensity shows food. Organism red encodes movement, green encodes sensing, and blue encodes longevity. There are no programmed species or predators.

The first run

4,000 ticks took 79.55 seconds on the 604e. There were 32,160 births, 26,181 deaths, and 14,580 actual trait mutations. The final population was 6,139.

Plots show a population boom and crash, recovery to near-full occupancy, falling feeding and sensing, and rising longevity

Near-complete occupancy makes movement difficult. Falling feeding and sensing traits are consistent with lower energy costs becoming advantageous. Initial lineage survival can also shift the means; this run alone cannot isolate a cause.
